What the FFE and your club offer
Lessons, hacks, holiday courses, trail rides, competitions, team games: riding goes far beyond your weekly lesson. Galop 2 asks you to pick out the FFE’s main activities and those of your club.
In the exam programme
- Identify the FFE’s main equestrian activities and the main activities your club offers.Common module B
In Galop 1 you saw that your club belongs to the Fédération française d’équitation (FFE), the French equestrian federation, and that your licence makes you a member. The FFE organises teaching and the Galops, competitions and riding tourism, and brings together clubs all over France.
Four main families of activities
Learning
Teaching
Group or private lessons, holiday courses, preparing and taking the Galops, first steps for the youngest riders at a pony club.
Getting out
Riding tourism
Hacks of a few hours, trail rides of several days with overnight stops, riding out in the open countryside; there are even Galops Pleine Nature, Galops for riding in the countryside.
Playing
Team games and sports
Mounted games, horseball, polo: fast games played in teams, excellent for balance and skill.
Competing
Competition
From Club and Pony level shows, open to riding-school riders, all the way up to Amateur and Pro classes.
The main disciplines
| Discipline | In one sentence |
|---|---|
| Show jumping (CSO in French) | Ride a course of fences in the right order without knocking down a pole. |
| Dressage | Ride a set sequence of movements in front of judges: the test. |
| Eventing (CCE in French) | Three tests for the same horse and rider: dressage, show jumping and cross-country over varied ground. |
| Hunter | A jumping course judged on style, rhythm and flow. |
| Endurance | Cover long distances out in the countryside, under veterinary checks. |
| TREC | Tests drawn from trail riding: route-finding, control of the paces, a course over varied ground. |
| Driving | Drive one or more horses harnessed to a carriage. |
| Vaulting | Gymnastics on a horse going round on a circle on the lunge, usually at canter. |
The FFE offers plenty of other activities: western riding, Equifun, Equifeel, working equitation… You will study what makes each competitive discipline different in Galop 3.
And at your club?
- Which lessons, for which levels, at what times?
- Holiday courses, hacks, trail rides?
- Competitions, and in which disciplines? A mounted games or horseball team?
- Parties, shows, open days?
Tip
Make a fact sheet about your club: three activities it offers, the disciplines it competes in, and the activity you would like to try. That is exactly what you will be asked.
Did you know?
Every summer, the FFE’s national equestrian centre at Lamotte-Beuvron, in the Loir-et-Cher, hosts the Open de France: the French championships for club and pony riders, which bring together thousands of competitors.
